Press Release by:

At its meeting on 23 September 2011 in Singapore (SGP) and on proposals of the International Karting Commission Members, the FIA World Motor Sport Council took in particular the following decisions concerning Karting:

Sporting Regulations
Within the framework of the 2012 CIK-FIA World KF1 Championship, it has been decided to introduce the allocation of engines to the Drivers by drawing lots, as agreed with the most involved engine Manufacturers in the category concerned. These Manufacturers shall expressly enter the Championship by stating that they are engine suppliers, and they must place at the disposal of Drivers a set of identical and sealed engines at each event. When they enter the Championship, Drivers will indicate the engine brand of their choice from entered makes, and they will be allocated at each event two engines by drawing lots from the set of engines of the said brand. These engines shall comply with the current KF2 regulations.
With the aim of making more attractive the yearly programme proposed to the Drivers of the categories concerned, it has been decided to increase to two the number of rounds counting towards the CIK-FIA European Championships of the KF2 & KF3 categories, as a replacement to the current format which comprises two regional (North and South) qualifications followed by a final. It will be mandatory for Drivers entered in these European Championships to take part in both their events in order to be eligible for the World Cups to be held later in the season.

Technical and Homologation Regulations
Two modifications with immediate application have been made to the valid Technical Regulations: on the one hand it will be mandatory to use reinforcement plates for the attachment of ballast when it is placed on the seat and, on the other, the reading of GPS data by data logging systems is authorised.
As from 2012, the use of tyres in the KZ1 category will be extended to «Medium» type compounds instead of being restricted to «Soft» ones.
In the year 2012, there will be a new homologation session for KF engines, to be valid as from 1st January 2013. Manufacturers will be able to homologate up to two makes of engines and two engine models per make, compared to just one make and one model until now. Bodywork Manufacturers will have the possibility to homologate and produce rear wheel protections made of several elements instead of being in one part.
As from 2013, the choice of the homologated carburettor make for the CIK-FIA KF3 Championships, Cups and Trophies will be left up to the Entrants’ appreciation. It will no longer be a single model designated further to a tender procedure.
In 2017, 250cc engines from Grand Prix motorcycles will be deleted from the list of engines approved for the Superkart category.

Calendar of the 2012 CIK-FIA Championships, Cups and Trophies
The FIA World Motor Sport Council has validated the proposed calendar of the CIK-FIA Championships, Cups and Trophies submitted for the 2012 season. This proposal included most of the dates and venues selected for next season, but the final and complete version of the calendar will be ratified at the next meeting of the World Council, in December. The addition of an event to the calendar is being studied, and so is the entry of the Monaco Kart Cup. The full programme of the CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship is still to be finalised as it has been possible to officialise only two out of the three scheduled rounds.
